Businesses Help Students With Job Search Skills

Issaquah Businesses Lend a Hand to Youth Looking to Develop Job Search Skills

Algebra Course? Check. Chemistry Course? Check. Job Search Skills Course? Probably Not.

Despite rigorous academic programs and extensive extracurriculars, many of today's students are entering the workforce less than prepared for the fundamentals of a modern day job search.

The Chamber and other local community groups are looking to change that.

In a partnership with the Issaquah Community Network, the Issaquah Schools Foundation, the Issaquah School District, the Issaquah Rotary Club and many others, local Chamber members and citizens are stepping forward to help local students gain an edge in career preparation by further developing their job search skills.

Over 120 students will attend the first "Youth Jobs Skills Fair" on Saturday, November 12th at Eastridge Church, where dozens of local business people, local leaders, and citizens, will gather for an intense four hours of hands-on training in the areas of interview skills, resume development, career networking, professional success and more.  Students can attend various breakout workshops on these topics as well as hear a keynote speech by noted speaker Huston Kraft.

Participants will also have a chance to have an informal lunch with a local professional in the career area/industry of their interest.  Everything from attorneys, accountants, teachers, doctors, office managers, physical therapists, engineers, event planners, military service and more.

"The Chamber takes our tagline of 'Where business and Community Meet' very seriously'" said Chamber CEO Matthew Bott. "We are therefore very excited to be involved in this important initiative to help our local students be as competitive as possible in the workforce."

The event organizers have included many local leaders, including Issaquah Community Network President Barb de Michele, Issaquah Schools Foundation Executive Director Robin Callahan, Issaquah School District representative Sue Gierke, Rotary Club of Issaquah Vocational Education Chair Bob Brock, and many others.

The Chamber is involved in a number of education-related efforts through the Chamber's Education and Government Affairs committees, led by Bill Werner of the Myrtle Masonic Lodge and Janice Chamberlain (Costco) and Tom Sessions (State farm), respectively.  The Committee organizes and distributes scholarships to local students in need.  The Chamber is also considering an endorsement of the 2012 Bond package put forward by the Issaquah School District and the Volunteers for Issaquah Schools.
